Pet Rehoming & Surrender

The majority of lost or stray dogs have families who love them, and they are typically found less than one mile from their homes. Whenever possible, it is best to try to locate a lost dog’s owner prior to bringing them to a shelter. Please review the information on Found Pet: What To Do.

SICSA is a non-profit shelter with an appointment-based intake process. If you can foster the dog while looking for their owner, we can provide supplies. Holding stray dogs at SICSA is dependent on space. Please call 937-294-6505, ext. 49 for additional information.

Many cats found outside have families or caretakers who love them, and it’s important to distinguish a lost cat from a community cat or cat who lives both inside and outside their home.

Lost or abandoned cats can be distinguished from community cats when at least one of the following applies:

• Wearing a collar with ID tag
• Has a microchip
• Known to be recently abandoned by a previous owner
• Actively trying to get into a particular home or building
• Declawed
• New to the area and has been seen in the area for 3 weeks or less
• Altered without an ear-tip
• Ravenous appetite and unthrifty, disheveled coat, significantly underweight (Signs of not thriving outdoors)

If any of the above apply, please review the information on Found Pet: What To Do. Less than 5% of cats in shelters are reunited with their owners, so their best chance of finding their family is with your help!

If none of the above apply, this is most likely an owned indoor/outdoor cat or a community cat who has a caretaker. If the cat is unaltered or you are unsure, please review our information on community cats and TNRM.
